BB Biotech — Positive Q3 returns; portfolio recycling accelerates

BB Biotech (BION) delivered positive Q326 results, with NAV increasing 5.6% in Swiss franc terms and the share price returning 6.5%, compared with a 12.0% gain for the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index (NBI). The relative underperformance largely reflected concentrated gains in selected benchmark constituents not represented in BION’s portfolio. Portfolio activity remained substantial, with 12 new investments and eight exits, supported by the redeployment of c CHF280m following the completed acquisitions of Crinetics and Nuvalent. Three portfolio companies secured US regulatory approvals, reinforcing the underlying clinical progress. Encouragingly, the discount to NAV narrowed modestly to 12.2% (from 12.9% at end-June). With an expanded portfolio of 43 companies and multiple Q426 catalysts, BION remains well positioned to capture opportunities across the biotechnology sector.

Fund objective

BB Biotech, a Swiss-based investment company (traded as a stock), targets long-term capital growth from biotech companies developing new drugs. At least 90% of the portfolio is held in listed companies, mainly those with marketed products or in advanced stages of development. BION is benchmarked against the Nasdaq Biotech Index (in Swiss francs) but is managed on a bottom-up basis, with a focused c 20–50 stock portfolio.

Q326 marked a continuation of BION’s positive absolute performance, although the quarter reversed the relative NAV outperformance recorded in recent periods. The NBI’s advance was unusually concentrated, with fewer than half its constituents recording gains. Strong performances from Moderna and genomics tools companies, neither represented in BION’s portfolio, contributed to the divergence. Rising interest rates also weighed on smaller biotechnology stocks in September. Nevertheless, BION’s nine-month NAV return reached 23.0% in CHF, while the share price gained 21.5%, compared with 31.8% for the benchmark.

Clinical execution remained encouraging. Revolution Medicines, Scholar Rock and Regeneron received US approvals for treatments targeting pancreatic cancer, spinal muscular atrophy and a rare bone disorder, respectively. Positive Phase III developments at Amgen and argenx provided further validation of portfolio assets. Strategic interest also remained strong, with five portfolio companies involved in completed acquisitions during 2026, highlighting sustained demand from larger pharmaceutical groups seeking innovative assets ahead of patent expiries.

Portfolio repositioning accelerated, with proceeds from the Crinetics and Nuvalent transactions reinvested into commercial businesses including Biogen, Incyte and Axsome, alongside selected clinical-stage opportunities. BION also re-entered Alnylam following share-price weakness. The portfolio now comprises 43 companies, up from 39 at end-June, providing broader exposure to potential value drivers while reducing reliance on individual clinical outcomes. BION continues to develop its proprietary AI platform to strengthen investment analysis and decision-making. More generally, we highlight that BION combines a long-term investment horizon with valuation-driven position management, adjusting holdings as the remaining upside and risks change

Looking ahead, the Q426 catalyst calendar includes anticipated regulatory decisions for Vertex/Gilead, BridgeBio and Summit Therapeutics, alongside further clinical readouts from other portfolio companies. We view BION’s active capital recycling and broader portfolio construction positively, although benchmark underperformance and macroeconomic uncertainty warrant monitoring. Sustained NAV performance, supported by clinical execution and strategic demand, remains central to the investment case and any further narrowing of the discount.
