Polar Capital Technology Trust (PCT) is a specialist global technology investment trust seeking long-term capital growth from companies at the forefront of disruptive transformation. Its remit spans a broad range of technology subsectors and geographies, providing diversified exposure within this dynamic sector. A broad mandate allows PCT to participate in successive waves of innovation rather than relying on any single technology theme, although AI is now the most important influence on portfolio positioning.

Equity Proposition

We highlight the key points of Polar Capital Technology Trust’s investment story.

1. Specialist expertise supports stock selection.

Technology has repeatedly created new market leaders while disrupting established franchises, making specialist research and a willingness to reposition particularly important. PCT is managed by one of the largest and most experienced dedicated technology investment teams in the sector, led by Ben Rogoff, who has been lead manager of the trust since 2006. Its portfolio is actively managed rather than benchmark driven, allowing the team to back emerging opportunities, use periods of volatility to adjust exposure and reduce or avoid large index constituents where it sees an unattractive balance of risk and reward, including businesses that may be vulnerable to technological disruption. We believe this combination of specialist knowledge, flexibility and portfolio discipline can support long-term relative performance.

2. AI monetisation is strengthening the infrastructure case.

The managers describe themselves as ‘AI maximalists’. They point to continuing improvements in AI models, broadening adoption and accelerating monetisation as AI moves from answering basic questions towards performing economically useful tasks. The managers believe the emergence of agentic AI, where systems can execute multi-step workflows with limited human intervention, could expand the addressable opportunity well beyond traditional IT spending. At the same time, demand for computing capacity remains ahead of supply, while major cloud providers continue to invest heavily as AI-related revenues and usage expand. We believe this combination of improving capability, adoption and monetisation provides growing fundamental support for the infrastructure build-out, although the returns on, and financing of, the substantial capital being deployed remain important to monitor.

3. Bottlenecks broaden the opportunity beyond the mega-caps.

PCT seeks to benefit from bottlenecks that emerge as AI infrastructure scales, rather than relying solely on identifying which model or application will ultimately dominate. The team looks for scarce inputs needed by a broad range of potential winners, with constraints already emerging across advanced semiconductors, memory, networking, storage, power and cooling. The managers expect these bottlenecks to migrate as resolving one constraint enables the system to scale until another becomes binding. This approach gives PCT scope to express its positive AI view across the infrastructure supply chain and beyond the largest US technology companies.

4. A strong track record is complemented by improved shareholder terms.

As PCT approaches its 30th anniversary, its recent outperformance builds on a strong longer-term record spanning several technology cycles. This supports the case that the team’s active stock and theme selection has added value over time, although the exceptional recent period should not be assumed to be repeatable. Shareholder terms have also improved following the removal of the performance fee and reduction in the base management fee, while the board has used buybacks when the shares trade at a discount to NAV. These features are supportive, but the investment case remains primarily about the team’s ability to identify where technology-sector profit pools are moving as the sector evolves.
