OpGen has announced the launch of its next-generation sequencing (NGS) services in the United States at its new Rockville-based service laboratory. The NGS lab, developed by its subsidiary Ares Genetics, offers short-turnaround genome sequencing of clinical isolates, artificial intelligence (AI) powered outbreak analysis that can be conveniently accessed through the company’s AREScloud web application. The closer proximity to a large US customer base allows OpGen to better leverage its Ares Genetics suite of products, expands its portfolio of services in the United States – in addition to the recent launch of Acuitas AMR Gene Panel – and increases cross-selling opportunities.

The new laboratory offers the full range of Ares Genetics’ sequencing and analysis services, including ARESiss (whole genome sequencing workflow for bacterial isolates), ARESid (identifying bacterial organisms present in samples) and ARESupa (a comprehensive antimicrobial resistance (AMR) marker capture assay). Some of the additional services include culture-free species identification from clinical or environmental samples and resistome surveillance from environmental samples like wastewater. All reports will be available on its web application, AREScloud, which also offers a subscription service. The subscription offers advanced services such as outbreak analysis by analysing data from isolates and metagenomic samples and running the query to ARESdb (Ares’s proprietary AMR database) for additional AMR-related information.
According to the World Health Organization, AMR is one of the top 10 global public health threats and costs the US healthcare system about $20bn every year. Scientists predict that bacterial resistance is set to spiral into a global pandemic, causing up to 10 million deaths by 2050. OpGen’s sequencing services should meet the need for constant surveillance, infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship.
The Rockville laboratory will be Ares’s second service laboratory, after the core laboratory in Vienna, Austria. With subsiding COVID-19 headwinds, OpGen has enhanced its focus towards expanding its core NGS laboratory services. The service lab launch indicates the company’s commitment to develop Ares’s services as a separate revenue stream and to expand its portfolio in the important US market. Our valuation remains unchanged from our last report.

Tetragon Financial Group’s (Tetragon’s) NAV declined 3.5% in H122 in total return terms, compared to a 20% fall in the MSCI ACWI Index (based on Refinitiv). The portfolio revaluation contributed 4.1pp to the decline, which was mostly due to a Q122 loss on Tetragon’s direct exposure to a publicly quoted biotech company and the downward revaluation of Equitix on the back of public multiples contraction. The best-performing assets in the portfolio were collateralised loan obligations (CLOs, which also assisted the valuation of the CLO manager LCM). Tetragon’s NAV total return was also supported by a NAV-accretive share repurchase (+3pp on NAV). Tetragon’s one-year NAV performance to end-June 2022 stands at 10%, compared to a 15% decrease in the MSCI ACWI (based on Refinitiv).
