Associated equity: Templeton Emerging Markets Investment Trust
Launched in June 1989, Templeton Emerging Markets Investment Trust was one of the first emerging markets funds in the UK. The trust seeks long-term capital appreciation through investment in companies operating in emerging markets or listed on the stock markets of such countries. This may include companies that have a significant amount of their revenues in emerging markets but are listed on stock exchanges in developed countries. Performance is benchmarked against the MSCI Emerging Markets Index.

Edison’s investment companies team recently published a review on Templeton Emerging Markets Investment Trust (known as TEMIT). The trust’s two managers, Chetan Sehgal and Andrew Ness, have a straightforward investment strategy, focusing on companies with sustainable earnings power that are trading at a discount to their estimated intrinsic value. This approach has proved successful as TEMIT is ahead of its MSCI Emerging Markets Index benchmark over the last one, three, five and 10 years. The trust also ranks highly against its generalist peers.
Emerging markets have delivered an average 7–8% annual total return to investors, which the managers expect can continue, given above-average economic growth and relatively attractive valuations in emerging market regions. Sehgal and Ness are part of a well-resourced emerging markets team of more than 70 investment professionals based in 13 countries around the globe.
