Jersey Electricity, in partnership with Guernsey Electricity through their jointly owned company Channel Islands Electricity Grid, has entered into a new four-year electricity supply agreement with EDF. The agreement will commence on 1 January 2028, following expiry of the existing arrangement on 31 December 2027, and forms an important part of Jersey Electricity’s long-term energy procurement strategy. Jersey currently imports the significant majority of its electricity requirements from France, principally from low-carbon nuclear and renewable generation.
Management stated that the new agreement will provide greater flexibility over the timing and management of electricity purchases, allowing Jersey Electricity to respond to changing market conditions and demand variability while continuing to use purchasing and hedging strategies to manage exposure to international energy markets. Management believes the agreement provides an appropriate balance between security of supply, commercial flexibility and disciplined management of future energy costs, while supporting expected demand growth from the continued electrification of heating and transport and the transition away from fossil fuels.
