BioVersys (SIX: BIOV) – RIV-CARE achieves first patient first visit
Published by Jyoti Prakash, CFA

BioVersys has announced first patient first visit (FPFV) in RIV-CARE, its c 100-patient Phase IIb open-label study evaluating lead asset BV100 against best-available-therapy (BAT) in difficult-to-treat carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) infections. The study complements the pivotal RIV-TARGET Phase III programme and is focused on high-resistance Asian markets, particularly China, where CRAB prevalence and unmet need are substantial. Importantly, RIV-CARE addresses a key emerging question: how BV100 performs against contemporary treatment regimens in clinical practice, potentially supporting physician adoption and commercial differentiation if approved.

As a reminder, the pivotal Phase III RIV-TARGET trial reported FPFV in April 2026 and is targeting c 300 hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (HABP)/ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (VABP) patients across c 100 sites in around 15 countries, with last patient enrolment expected by end-2027 and top-line data in early 2028. Against this backdrop, we see RIV-CARE as strategically complementary, particularly as the CRAB treatment landscape is evolving. Xacduro (sulbactam-durlobactam), approved by the FDA in 2023, demonstrated 28-day mortality of 19% versus 32% with colistin, establishing a more credible efficacy benchmark than older polymyxin-based regimens. RIV-CARE therefore provides an opportunity to test BV100-based combinations against contemporary BAT, including cefiderocol-containing regimens, and clarify where BV100 could fit within an increasingly competitive treatment algorithm. The H127 interim analysis could therefore offer an early indication of whether this efficacy signal remains compelling against a stronger treatment backdrop. Wellcome funding of c CHF14m offsets around two-thirds of RIV-CARE costs, making this a relatively capital-efficient way to generate potentially important differentiation data around BioVersys’s lead asset.
