Nanoco’s launch of a subsidiary, Nanoco 2D Materials, will provide funding and structure for development work in the field of 2D nanoparticles, which the company has been carrying out with graphene pioneer and Nobel Laureate, Prof. Konstantin Novoselov. The commercialisation of such materials is some way off but the potential looks exciting and the development further emphasises the broad applicability of Nanoco’s nano-materials technology platform, IP and expertise.

The new wholly owned subsidiary will focus the development of a cost-effective method for the production of 2D nano-materials. This new class of materials is semiconductor based and, like graphene, is only one or two atoms thick, possessing a number of interesting properties in its ability to be exceptionally strong, lightweight, flexible and an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. Potential commercial applications include novel catalysts, photo-detectors, photovoltaics, inverters and light-emitting devices. Nanoco has been carrying out initial research work with Prof. Novoselov over the past 12 months to establish the feasibility of these materials. Initial results have been positive and hence the two teams are combining in the new subsidiary to further develop and ultimately commercialise these materials.
The subsidiary will not drag on Nanoco’s cash in the short term, being funded by a £400k 10-year loan note from the University of Manchester as part of its initiative to create a graphene hub around the university. It carries a 6.5% coupon, which is not payable until either redemption, or the conversion of the note. The loan is convertible into new 2D materials shares, subject to a raise of an additional £1m of capital, or a sale of 2D materials.

Research: Investment Companies
Witan Pacific Investment Trust (WPC) has outperformed its MSCI AC Asia Pacific Free benchmark since adopting a multi-manager strategy at end-May 2005. However, following a period of relative weakness (particularly since mid-2016), the board has changed the external manager line-up (effective from end-September 2017). It is enthusiastic about the two new managers: Dalton Investments and Robeco Institutional Asset Management (and has continued confidence in incumbent managers Aberdeen and Matthews). The board is hopeful that the new line-up can build on WPC’s long-term record of outperformance. WPC aims to generate long-term growth in both capital and income, and the regular annual dividend has increased in each of the last 13 years.
